Sales Tax has its evolution in India dating back to Kautilya's Arthasastra. However, it ceased to be in existence after the eighteenth century. Its rejuvenation as a fiscal measure is an outcome of the present century when, for the first time, the Indian States were empowered to impose sales tax through the autonomy provided by the Government of India Act, 1935.
